The pilot season of NT Live is a new initiative by the UK's National Theatre to broadcast performances of its plays onto cinema screens around the world. The first play to be featured will be the National Theatre's thrilling new production Phedre by Jean Racine in a version by the late Poet Laureate, Ted Hughes. It stars Dame Helen Mirren in the title role with rising British film star Dominic Cooper (Mamma Mia, The Escapist, The History Boys, The Duchess). Consumed by an uncontrollable passion for her young stepson and believing Theseus, her absent husband, to be dead, PHEDRE confesses her darkest desires and enters the world of nightmare. When Theseus returns, alive and well, PHEDRE, fearing exposure, accuses her stepson of rape. The result is carnage.
