Novecento

NOVECENTO, a play by Alessandro Baricco Starring: Claudiu Bleont Special Guests: Ngati Whatua o Orakei Kapa Haka Group lead by William Davis Played in Romanian with English subtitles One-man shows are becoming more and more popular these days. This one is a triumph of style over content. It depicts the life of the great musician Danny Boodman T.D. Lemon, aka. Novecento. From the smoky, coal-filled bowels of a ship, a figure emerges to tell us a yarn. The speaker was a trumpeter in a jazz band on a transatlantic liner during the interwar years, which is where he got to know the play`s hero, Novecento. Abandoned as a baby under the liner`s grand piano at the turn of the century, Novecento was lovingly reared by a steward, and grew up to be a great jazz pianist, but never set foot on land. Claudiu Bleont is a Romanian film and theatre actor, a remarkable television celebrity and comedian. He is fluent in four languages and he is known in Romania not only by his acting ability, but also for his improvisational talent. Claudiu has played in more than 50 lead roles at many theatres in Romania and around the world, often preferring more classical productions. However, one of his most well-known theatre performances is as Romeo in a production of Shakespeare`s “Romeo and Juliet” with the balcony scene replaced by a bathtub. He has received several national and international awards for his theatre work. He has appeared in more than 20 films, under many of the premier Romanian and international directors. He played several lead roles, one of them in “An Unforgettable Summer”, with actress Kristin Scott-Thomas, under the direction of Lucian Pintilie; the film was nominated for the Golden Palm at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival and will be screened here at The Vic on Sunday the 30st of June. Recently Claudiu Bleont appeared in Eva which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
