Joffrey Ballet: Mavericks of American Dance
A movie event not to be missed! This documentary weaves a wealth of rare archival footage and photographs along with interviews featuring former and current Joffrey star dancers, showing the full history of the Company from its founding to the present. The film features rare excerpts from many seminal Joffrey works including 'Astarte', 'Trinity' and 'Billboards' as well as breakthrough collaborations with choreographers Twlya Tharp (Deuce Coupe), Kurt Jooss (The Green Table) and Leonide Massine (Parade). This New Zealand Premier Screening has been organised by teachers of the Auckland Region Royal Academy of Dance as a fundraiser for the upcoming prestigious Genee International Ballet Competition. In December 2012, for the first time ever, the Royal Academy of Dance, in association with The Royal NZ Ballet will hold its flagship event, the Genee International Competition – an "Olympic Games" of ballet – in New Zealand. The competition will bring 50 – 60 of the most talented young ballet dancers from around the world to Wellington to work on classical and contemporary solos under the tutelage of internationally renowned ballet teachers and choreographers. Tickets $30 includes complimentary glass of wine or juice on arrival at 4pm followed by the film at 4.30pm. Why not make a day of it! Catch the Fullers Ferry from downtown Auckland, wander through the delightful village of Devonport, stopping to browse on the way, enjoy the film and a leisurely meal at Didas Wine and Tapas Lounge, (next door to the theatre) before catching the ferry home.
