I Am Not Madame Bovary

Director Feng Xiaogang and novelist Liu Zhenyun draw upon Chinese folklaw as well as Flaubert's tale of infidelity in this sly satirical drama of a provincial woman whose drive to right a perceived wrong causes all levels of Beijing bureaucracy to quake. Winner of Best Film and Best Actress at the San Sebastian Film Festival, Fan Bingbing stars as provincial restuaranteur Li, a spurned women seeking a divorce from her husband. Explaining to the local magistrate that she is already divorced but that divorce was a sham to acquire a second, state-provided apartment, Li is quickly dismissed as a time-waster. Taking her complaint to the magistrate's superior, Li's list of those who have done her wrong begins to grow. As members of China's ruling party continue to underestimate the determined woman, heads begin to roll and her increasingly epic plight turns from punchline to political pitfall. Presented in a reductive, 'tunnel-vision' screen format that lend a painterly quality to the stunningly-shot film, I AM NOT MADAME BOVARY is certain to be a contender for Best Foreign Language Feature the upcoming awards season. Mandarin language, English subtitles.
