1. fairbrotherReviewed at 11:48AM on 27 Jun 2006Hidden Worth Seeking - If you like your thrillers fast, flashy, and fatuous, you'd best steer clear of Hidden: it'll bore you silly. Some of us, however, like films that slow things down and give space to fully consider what we are being... more presented with, and that's the approach that director Michael Haneke uses here, again, to unsettling effect. Within it's long, sustained takes, this flick has many shifting agendas: from the simple set-up question "how much harm can a video really mean?", it questions television as the mechanism by which we Westerners distance ourselves from one another and the world at large; it questions the difference between "guilt" and "responsibility"; it even questions not only the audiences' motive for seeing the film, but their motives for interpreting it as they do! It's well-acted, and produced to the meticulous, exacting standards of a perfectionist. In short, Hidden is a richly layered study of paranoia for those keen on an intellectual work-out. All others beware...
