French Film Festival: Bird People

Selected for Un Certain Regard at the 2014 Cannes International Film Festival, Bird People is a tale of disconnection in an overtly connected world. The movie opens with Parisian commuters on their morning journey, allowing us to witness their thoughts as they list their professional and personal obligations of the day. Among them is Audrey (2015 Festival cover girl Anaïs Demoustier, The New Girlfriend) who is on her way to a hotel where she works as a maid. Checking into the hotel is overworked American businessman Gary (Josh Charles, Dead Poets Society, The Good Wife), in Paris for meetings and a stopover before heading to Dubai. Gary, finding himself alone in his hotel room by the airport, decides to quit everything. Despite pleas via email, Skype, and phone conversations, he will not go back to his job, wife, and family in America. The film takes a more mystical turn when we follow young Audrey, who is not really interested in her studies and wishes she had a more rewarding job. If only she could be free like a bird. Pascale Ferran (Coming to Terms with the Dead, Lady Chatterley) delivers another honest and touching film that encourages us to look at ourselves (and birds) in a different way.
