Anna Coddington

Anna Coddington is currently working on the follow-up to her second solo album ‘Cat & Bird’, which won her Best Maori Female Solo Artist at the Waiata Maori Music Awards in 2011. ‘Cat & Bird’ followed up on the melodic, electric guitar based elements of her more acoustic leaning debut ‘The Lake’ (2008) for an upbeat and varied album that was critically acclaimed for its songwriting and the tasteful playing of her band. As well as working on her third solo record in 2013, Coddington has a number of collaborations and projects on the boil, which should all combine for an exciting new musical direction. These include a new band Street Neighbourz (with her real life neighbour Jason Smith) playing what can be loosely described as neighbourhood-funk, and collaborations with renowned producers such as Dick Johnson, SJD and Jeremy Toy (Opensouls). Coddington grew up in the seaside town of Raglan, New Zealand and started playing music at age 11 when her Dad had taught her to play drums. By 14 she had wrangled a few guitar chords out of her Mum and by age 16 she was fronting and writing for her first band, Handsome Geoffery. She later filled the same roles in four-piece band Duchess. Coddington has also been a featured artist in NZ’s great collaboration bands Fly My Pretties and Eru Dangerspiel. As a solo artist Coddington continues to hone the crafts of writing, singing, playing guitar, drums and whatever else is at hand, and getting it all coming out of the speakers right. After a brief hiatus over the last couple of years, 2013 is the year to keep an eye and an ear out for Anna Coddington.
